Hydro Ottawa public Information Sessions
As promised, we have secured Hydro Ottawa to offer specific online information sessions for those areas of College Ward that have been most frequently and most dramatically impacted by outages. Hydro Ottawa representatives will attend to provide updates on the work they are doing in your neighbourhood to improve reliability moving forward, and to hear from you. Although areas all over the city are impacted by weather events, Crestview/ City View and Bells Corners continue to see vulnerabilities and Hydro is paying attention.
Our first online meeting on February 6th at 7:00pm will be specific to the Crestview/City View neighbourhoods, and we will be hosting a second online meeting on February 22nd at 7:00pm for the Bells Corners neighbourhoods.
Residents from anywhere are encouraged to join us, but please note that we will be focusing on issues related to the specific neighbourhoods for each.
Please register below:

Update on 2335 Baseline Rd Development Proposal
A letter was sent to residents of Queensway Terrace South in College Ward this past October regarding a development proposal at 2335 Baseline Road. This letter lacks significant context of the discussion my staff and I had with the developer, and wrongly stated that my staff and I support the proposal as presented - as it stands, we still have questions. I have brought this egregious misrepresentation to the attention of the City of Ottawa Integrity Commissioner for their review, and the Committee of Adjustment will be reviewing the application on February 6, 2024.

A new greenspace for College Ward
I recently toured the almost-completed Pinecrest Creek Stormwater Pond project, part of the LRT expansion. I am very excited: this 15.25 hectare greenspace in the middle of College Ward will be a tremendous benefit to residents.
Besides the connected ponds, multi-use pathways will circumnavigate the area and benches will offer places to relax and watch the birds and wildlife. There's some landscaping to be done in the spring, but we should see it opened to the public this summer.
In addition to the beauty and the creation of habitat, the pond system will help prevent stormwater surges through neighbourhoods close to Pinecrest Creek. This creek is always moving, and moving water reduces the likelihood of mosquitoes. Specific vegetation is intended to discourage geese from nesting. I'll provide more information as we get closer to the opening.
One more reason to look forward to the warm weather!

Outdoor Rinks and Sledding Hills
In addition to the rink at Ben Franklin Place, College Ward is fortunate to have several outdoor rinks maintained by hardworking volunteers. THANK YOU TO OUR COLLEGE WARD RINK VOLUNTEERS! You can find a full list, with interactive map, at https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/facilities/parks-and-green-space/outdoor-rinks#section-27fecdf9-ddf9-46bb-8e64-8218a96f068f
Please note that unseasonal warmer weather means these rinks may have to close temporarily. Please respect any closures by staying off the surface so you don’t damage the ice.
Ottawa has a unique landscape with a high number of naturally occurring hills on City property. Staff have identified more than 60 hills as “approved sledding hills”, which receive site risk inspections, safety signage, and protective measures such as hay bags and foam padding.
In College Ward, there are two approved sledding hills: Brucelands Park and Leslie Park. You can see a full list of approved sledding hills at Ottawa.ca/sledding.

Attention All Gardeners: Seedy Saturday
The Alta Vista Community Association Local Food Committee, in cooperation with Just Food and Seeds of Diversity, is hosting this year's Seedy Saturday. They have moved to a central location, next to the General Hospital on Smyth, easily accessible by bus route #55 and surrounded by plenty of parking. The event runs March 2nd 10-3 at 691 Smyth Road.
We have over fifteen seed vendors registered, along with artisanal producers from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. We are planning five free garden workshops throughout the day, live music, hot lunch and a children's corner. Admission is free and there will be door prizes.

Black History Month Film: The Road Taken, by Selwyn Jacob
This 1996 documentary takes a nostalgic ride through history to present the experiences of Black sleeping-car porters who worked on Canada's railways from the early 1900s through the 1960s. There was a strong sense of pride among these men and they were well-respected by their community. Yet, harsh working conditions prevented them from being promoted to other railway jobs until finally, in 1955, porter Lee Williams took his fight to the union.
Claiming discrimination under the Canada Fair Employment Act, the Black workers won their right to work in other areas. Interviews, archival footage and the music of noted jazz musician Joe Sealy (whose father was a porter) combine to portray a fascinating history that might otherwise have been forgotten.
